Basilica of St Mary, Norfolk VA

2009/08/12

The Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception is one of several historic churches in downtown Norfolk. The church community has been in Norfolk for over 200 years, though the current church was built in the mid 1800s.

The church was built in a Gothic style, as seen in the finials and other details on the spire in the above photo. Sadly, the areas surrounding the church are now somewhat less than stellar; one of the nearby sights is a freeway offramp. Still, the church is a well-known landmark in downtown Norfolk, and as nice as the outside appears, the inside is, perhaps, even more stunning.

If you’re interested in learning more about the church and its history, please feel free to visit the church’s website.

Enjoy.
