Jay Pritzker Pavilion, 15 November 2010

Those of y’all who know me know that I’m not overly fond of Frank Gehry. Given that, I should probably expound upon my thoughts with regard to the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, here in downtown Chicago. Unfortunately, as today has been one of those long ones, I don’t much feel like using my brain anymore; in fact, I only just wrapped up work about an hour ago – seeing as how it’s now 2334, I think it’s fairly obvious why I don’t want to use my brain anymore today. As such, enjoy the following, free from the burden of having to also read whatever it is I’m blathering on about.

Fear not, though…I shall (eventually) make plain my thoughts regarding the design of the pavilion, as well as my thoughts on Gehry’s designs in general. Probably later this week. Maybe.

Notes:

[1]: Due to the crop factor when using non-DX lenses on a DX-format sensor, the effective focal length of this lens was actually 30mm, not 20mm. Obviously, the extra 1.5x crop is helpful when using telephoto lenses (well, it can be, depending on what you’re doing), but for wideangle lenses, it gets to be a bit of a hassle, since anything smaller than 20mm or so on a 135 camera tends to be in the fisheye category, and these are specialized (and therefore, expensive) lenses that not many folks own. 30mm is also okay as a wideangle (I use a 28mm for my Canon AE-1, for example), but an effective 24mm (or even 20mm) would be a bit more useful – alas, that means I’d have to spend more money…and that’s never fun.

[2]: Which means basically nothing, since I decided to convert the photo to black and white. OTOH, since the metal panels and structural members are all grey anyways, well. Yes, there is, indeed, a method to my madness. Occasionally.
