USS Wisconsin, 13 January 2011

That’s right…there’s a battleship parked in downtown Norfolk…and it’s every bit as awesome as it sounds!

The Wisconsin (BB-64) was towed into position on the Elizabeth River roughly a decade ago after she had been retired from service. I sometimes wish we still had some ships of this nature in active service, if only because, well. Nothing says “Don’t f*ck with me” like a 16″ diameter 2,700 lb explosive shell (1,9oo lb for the nuclear! shell) flying towards you at 2,500 fps from over five miles away. Yes, I know…cruise missiles and such, but still. So not the same thing…

Anyways, there’s plenty of information about these magnificent ships online, so Google them, why don’t ya? Or just enjoy the photos.
