Chicago Blizzard, 07 February 2011

2011/02/07

In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple weeks, you’re probably well aware that the country got walloped with a rather sizable winter storm last week. I know it was on the 2nd, and it’s taken me this long to post anything about it; what can I say? I was out every day after the blizzard (and, as you’ll see in a moment, during it as well) “documenting” what was happening to the city. Fun stuff, that was. So, without further ado, here’s what the blizzard looked like on February 2nd in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago!

Photo Information:

Location: Chicago Illinois; Uptown Neighborhood
Camera: Nikon D80
Lens: Nikon Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 DX
ISO Equivalency: 100
Color Setting: Vivid (Black & White conversion in post-processing)

As for the specific locations, they are as follows (streets are listed as north/south first, then east/west):

1) Manhattan Liquor at the northwest corner of Broadway & Buena

2) Intersection of Broadway, Sheridan, & Montrose, facing north

3) St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church at the northwest corner of Sheridan & Buena

4) Red Line elevated tracks at the Sheridan Stop, just south of Sheridan & Irving Park (view facing south from the intersection)

5) Apartments on the east side of Sheridan, between Cuyler & Belle Plaine

Note that the latter three photos were shot from the middle of the street, as it turned out to be easier to navigate there than on the sidewalks; the former were constantly plowed by the city even during the blizzard, as the major streets all serve as snow routes during winter (i.e. streets that need to be kept clear, in case of emergencies and such), so while the snow was accumulating quickly, there were never more than a couple inches on the major streets – compared to the 20″ (average) snowfall that piled up elsewhere…like on the sidewalks. And besides, apart from the plows, it wasn’t like there were many cars on the streets at that point! It does appear that the CTA remained in operation the whole time, though…those guys don’t stop for nothing!

And yes, before you go questioning my sanity, I know it’s not entirely wise to go wandering around in one of the worst blizzards the city has seen…but hey, I’m not entirely sane, either, now am I?

Enjoy.
